A brand-new initiative to help elderly or disabled residents play their part in recycling household waste has been developed in Collieston.

The Rainbow Recycling scheme is the idea of the Sheehan family who were looking for suitable activities in the community for their 19 year old son Diarmid. Diarmid has autism, and although he attends Banff and Buchan College on three days a week, on the other days it can be hard to find activities which engage and interest him.

Diarmid and his father Mick go round the village of Collieston every Tuesday morning doing their own doorstep collection of recyclable materials from local people who are unable to walk or drive to the nearest recycling point.

Although the weekly collections are free – at Christmas kind hearted villagers made donations of £200 to St Andrews School in Inverurie where Diarmid went to school from the age of three.
