Harry at the double
Harry Emslie receives the first of his prizes from Lisa ODonnell from show sponsors Novartis Animal Health.
Buchan farmer Harry Emslie bagged a brace of championships at an outstanding show and sale of spring calving heifers at the Thainstone Centre, Inverurie today.
Harry, of Kinknockie, Mintlaw, won both the champion heifer and the champion pair of heifers at the event, which was sponsored by Novartis Animal Health.
His champion heifer was a 30-month-old Limousin cross in calf to his 13,000gns British Blue stock bull Tamhorn Dynamite. It sold for £3,200 to Orkney showman Balfour Baillie, Sebay, Tankerness.
The champion pair were two British Blue cross heifers, which sold for £2,000 each to the show judges, father and son Ewan and Kevin Cruickshank, Coleburn, Longmorn, Elgin.
Today’s event featured what was regarded by the ringside as one of the best selections of heifers see at this sale, and for the first time all 500 entries were BVD tested negative and vaccinated.
This was reflected in the strong bidding for the Limousin, Simmental, Saler and British Blue cross heifers with buyers from all over Scotland, Cumbria and Wales attending.
The sale also included three dispersals of breeding cattle including the 80-strong spring calving herd from Alistair Smart of G.P. Smart and Son, Shiel, Muir of Fowlis, Alford.
They included 23 pedigree Limousin cows, in calf to Limousin and British Blue bulls, which sold to a high of 3,400gns for the five-year-old Winnington Cello, in calf to the 12,000gn Ballygrange Dudley.
John Angus, Aberdeen & Northern marts cattle manager said: “There was a tremendous show of entries with a good selection for buyers and the sellers were delighted by the trade, particularly for strong well-bred heifers.
“There was also a superb demand for the dispersal cattle with some excellent prices.”
John Gregor, Aberdeen & Northern Marts general manager, said: “The value of having BVD tested and vaccinated breeding stock was clear to see today from the demand at the ringside, particularly as the next stages of the Scottish government’s BVD eradication programme approach.
“Today’s sale offered excellent, top quality cattle from start to finish and that was shown in the demand and the prices at the ringside.”
