A GROUP of local residents are gearing up to celebrate New Year in grand fashion, with a proposed Hogmanay concert in the town centre.

The small committee, who have established a Facebook page to gauge local interest in such an event, have attracted 280 notes of interest from residents as of Tuesday evening. The proposals, which have not yet been articulated in detail, are anticipated to evolve into an annual event which, it will hoped, will draw crowds to the town comparable to those visiting Ellon’s Bonfire Night, Pedalcar Race and Christmas Lights Switch-On.

A source inside the committee confirmed that members were planning a big event for December 31, 2013, but that the proposals were still at an early stage and much work remained to be done on bringing them to fruition.

Speaking to the Times, our source said: “It’s going to be a big party. Nothing definite has been confirmed yet, and the proposals have to go before a number of local bodies for approval. Thus far, however, the noises we’ve been hearing have been generally positive ones, and we’ve been hugely impressed by the public response to the Facebook - 250 likes in less than 24 hours.

“The plans at this stage are for a concert party on Market Street, incorporating the Market Street Car Park. We’ve spoken to security companies, stage providers and a number of bands thus far.

“There’s still a lot to get done, and nothing will be set in stone until we get the official go-ahead from the council and emergency services. Meetings are scheduled in the near future with the concerned bodies to discuss what we’ll be able to do.

He added: “This would be a major event, though. There would be a big stage, with a professional sound system like the one at the AECC. We’d be aiming to sell several thousand tickets, and make enough money to turn it into an annual event with some of the profits donated to local charities. It would involve

“We’d also be aiming to keep the tickets affordable, possibly below £20 a head for adults, and less for children.”

The Times understands that the group organising the event is comprised of five local residents who have no affiliation to any other organisation in the town.

It is also understood that further information will be posted on the group’s Facebook page in short order, and that an official website is around two weeks away.

For those interested in attending the putative celebrations, the group’s Facebook page can be found at http://www.facebook.com/ellon.hogmanayevent.
