Hundreds of pounds for Balmedie Gala

BALMEDIE’S Gala has benefited from a cash injection from the town’s Co-Operative store, after the manager handed over a £500 donation.

The cheque was received by Wishart McBride on behalf of the town’s community council, who have responsibility for organising the annual event. The cheque is the second donation that the Co-Op have made in two years, after a similar donation to last year’s gala fund.

Speaking to the Times, Mr McBride said that the money was a huge boost to the organisation of the gala.

“This is by far and away the biggest donation we’ve had thus far,” he said. “The staff at the Co-Op have also been a huge help at the events themselves, laying on and manning the barbecue. This donation will go towards covering the cost of the marquee, and will also help fund local community groups. It’s a great help.”

He added that plans for this year’s Balmedie Gala were already well underway, and that the event would be bigger and better than last year’s.

“The gala is organised for June 9,” he said. “What we’re really hoping for is better weather than we had last year!”

Manager Arlene Calder added that the Co-Op would again be manning the barbecue, and that it had proven to be a popular attraction.

“We were approached two years ago by the community council, and we’re thrilled to be taking our part in the community,” she said. “We really believe in community engagement - and it’s good fun as well!”
