LOCAL groups have benefited from thousands of pounds worth of grants from the organisers of the Xodus Ythan Challenge.

The organising committee handed over the grants to representatives of 11 local groups on Thursday night at The Meadows Sports Centre. The donation follows what organisers have described as the most successful Ythan Challenge to date, with a record 493 participants competing on June 17..

The Xodus Ythan Challenge - which sees participants tackling an obstacle course running through the Esslemont Estate - is an annual fixture in the town’s sporting callender, attracting entries from far and wide.

Alison Chalmers, chair of the Ythan Challenge organising committee, said: “It’s great to be able to give something back to these groups who have helped us so much. This year’s event was the most-popular yet and it wouldn’t be the success it is without the support of the organisations.”

James Knipe, lead engineer at Xodus Group, said: “This is the second year we have sponsored the Xodus Ythan Challenge and we are proud to be associated with such a popular and challenging event.

“It’s great that £3,000 of the money raised from the race will benefit a number of groups in Ellon and district. We’re looking ahead to next year’s event and hope it’s as successful as this year’s.”

Those who benefitted included: The 1990 (Ellon) Squadron Air Training Corp; the 1st Ellon Boys’ Brigade; Ellon Hockey Club; The Ythan Amateur Swimming Club; The Aberdeen Surf Lifesaving Club; The Alan Middleton Trust; Aberdeen Coastguard Rescue Team; the Scottish Ambulance Service; The Victoria Hall; and Ellon Meadows 15s FC.
