Park and Ride plans parked by councillors

Councillors have deferred plans to expand the car parking area and to relocate the existing recycling centre at Ellon’s Park and Ride facility on Castle Road, after raising concerns over the proposed security measures for the site.

Councillors at the Formartine Area Committee considered the Phase 1 proposal to expand the existing facility by creating an additional 40 car parking spaces to the east of the existing site.

The present recycling facilities would be moved to the north of the site, while an illuminated ‘Park and Ride’ sign would be placed at the entrance.

However, proposals to erect ‘Out of Hours’ security barriers at the car park entrance came under fire, after Councillors questioned whether or not they were really necessary.

Councillor Isobel Davidson said that she was unhappy with the proposed measures, citing the Park and Ride at Bridge of Don, and what she described as the “nuisance factor” of the gates being locked at a relatively early hour each night.

Moving a motion to defer, she described the measures as “over the top.” Boy racers, she said, were not a particular problem at the site and that it “should remain open for people to come and go at times which suit them.”

She was backed by Cllr Debra Storr, who asked that the security measures be looked at again before the proposal returned to committee. Proposals for Phase 2, which will be submitted as a separate application, include a further car park extension to the east and an extension of the bus stands to the south.
