Stuartfield residents looking to community buy the Crichie Inn

COMMUNITY OWNED?: The Crichie Inn at Stuartfield which could be placed under community ownership if the idea gains enough support

A SMALL group of residents have decided to take action in order to save their local pub.

Folk of Stuartfield have come up with the idea of community ownership to avoid the closure of the village’s Crichie Inn.

The pub has been up for sale numerous times over the years and every time it does, locals fear it could spell the end of the popular waterhole.

Questionaires have been made available in the village for residents to have their say on the idea and, should it get the go ahead, what kind of facilities they would like to see the pub offer.

The idea of community ownership had been suggested after local pubs in Old Deer and Auchnagatt had closed down and residents of Stuartfield did not want the same thing happen to them.

A public meeting will be held in the village hall on Thursday, February 7 at 7.30pm for those who are interested in discussing the idea.

Local butcher Ewan Morrice said he did not want to see the pub close down, stating: “It is a good pub and it would be a shame to see it go. There is always good company and a great atmosphere.

“The last thing I’d want to see is it being knocked down to make way for flats or houses.”

With sufficient backing and community support, the idea of community ownership would be viable.

If the pub were to become community owned, any profit made would be re-invested locally benefiting Stuartfield.
