An ABERDEENSHIRE distillery has won a top single malt prize at the 2012 World Whiskies Awards.
The Glen Garioch 12-Year-Old Malt, crafted at the Oldmeldrum distillery, was named best Highland Single Malt 12 Year and Under at the annual awards run by Whisky Magazine.
The honour is regarded as an especially significant award for the small local distillery.
Normally a reserved malt savoured by a select following, Glen Garioch‘s gem was discovered by some of the world’s most established judges.
Comprising drinks retailers and journalists from across the world, together with master blenders, distillers and brand ambassadors from the industry, the judging panel uncovered the Glen Garioch 12 year old by praising its stand-out quality amongst the most illustrious of competition.
Brand manager, John Mullen, was delighted at the win.
He said: “Being fiercely proud of its Highland roots, it’s great to bring this award back home to Oldmeldrum as a mark of a job well done for the team.
“The hints of heather and pear notes distinct to the 12-year-old must have captured the judges’ senses and now some of the world’s leading whisky experts have discovered that Glen Garioch really is the rare find of the malt whisky market.”
This latest acknowledgement follows last year’s prestigious double gold medal at the San Francisco World Spirits competition, for Glen Garioch’s Founder’s Reserve, underlining the special quality of dram produced by the distillery.
