A strategy aimed at making Aberdeen City and Shire a sustainable tourist destination, whilst enhancing the region’s outstanding assets has been launched at the Buller o’ Buchan.

The Aberdeen City and Shire Tourism Partnership’s area tourism strategy was also marked with a networking lunch at Cruden Bay Golf Club.

The Lord Provosts of both Aberdeen City Council and Aberdeenshire Council - Cllr George Adam and Cllr Jill Webster, respectively - addessed attendees at the event on Monday this week.

The Aberdeen City and Shire Tourism Partnership made up of representatives from the tourism industry, both local authorities, VisitScotland and other stakeholders - have inputted into this regional strategy.

It is aimed at driving growth and maximising the contribution which Aberdeen City and Shire can make to delivering the new national strategy ‘Tourism Scotland 2020’. Among items being highlighted at the launch was the new Aberdeenshire Coastal Path, which will extend from St Cyrus in the south of Aberdeenshire to Logie Head, just east of Cullen - a distance of 146km/91 miles.

Colin Crosby, chairman of the tourism partnership, said: “This strategy is a partnership document which brings forward a vision of what we want to achieve in Aberdeen City and Shire to 2020.

“We are a prosperous region and we want to maximise on the tourism opportunities surrounding golf, nature, business tourism and events and festivals to bring as many visitors to the area as we can, which will, in turn, boost the local visitor economy in Aberdeen City and Shire.

“Targeting the markets that give us the greatest potential to grow, we intend to work in partnership with tourism groups and individual businesses to make our tourism product one of the best.”
