Vigorous public response to rail link proposal

editorial image

LOCAL residents have overwhelmingly backed the idea of a railway between Ellon and Aberdeen, the Times can reveal.

An astonishing response to the proposals on the paper’s Facebook page shows that many in the town agree with the idea - however many were sceptical about the route ever receiving the funds or backing necessary for construction.

Councillors on Aberdeenshire’s Infrastructure Services Committee recently backed calls to investigate the possibility of re-establishing a connection between Ellon and Aberdeen, which last ran in 1979. The route is currently used as a walking and cycle path, and runs between Fraserburgh and Aberdeen, passing through Ellon.

Last week, Ellon councillors Rob Merson and Richard Thomson welcomed the proposal, and Cllr Isobel Davidson added her support to the project on the Times Facebook page. Cllr Gillian Owen also expressed support, saying: “Dr Beeching has a lot to answer for! Personally, I would love to see the Railway back up here but I suspect that the amount of money it would take to re-open the lines would be out of the Scottish Government’s league. However, we should be looking at projects that are more achievable and I consider the dualling from Ellon to Peterhead essential. The trouble is, it does not even appear to be on the radar.”
