RESIDENTS in Formartine were given a rare treat last weekend, after being invited to a special behind-the-scenes tour at Glen Garioch distillery in Oldmeldrum.

The visitors were invited to see what goes into making an award-winning whisky, as well as being asked to bottle some fine single malts themselves and enjoy a cup of tea at the end of the tour.

Mid-Formartine Councillor Paul Johnston said that the tour had been well received by local residents, with a good turnout.

He added that the industry deserved praise following a difficult year which, despite the recession, saw Scotch whisky exports rise by 12%.

Cllr Johnston, who campaigned to save Glen Garioch after it was mothballed in the 90s, said that the event illustrated the industry’s importance to the local area.

“The whisky industry is important to Aberdeenshire not only because it employs local people but also is part of our image. It underpins much of our tourism and lifestyle that gives the north east an economic resilience”

It was not just a great day for Scotland’s last town centre distillery, but it also underlined the growing success of Glen Garioch, winning awards and joining the elite of Scotland’s malt whisky industry.”
