Local lassies to dance at Disney

HIGHLAND Dancers at a local dancing school are getting set for the trip of a lifetime, as they prepare to take part in the Scottish Highland Dance International at Disneyland Paris.

Teacher Rhona Lawrence told the Times that the 41 girls would be making the journey to France on November 10, with the festival running until November 14. While there, they will perform traditional Highland Dance routines to an audience of hundreds, as part of a large contingent of enthusiastic Highland dancers from across the country.

Rhona told the Times: “It’s not so much a competition as a showcase of Highland dancing talent. People will come from all over the world to watch, and to take part - our contingent will make up 41 out of about 300 dancers taking part, from 24 different Highland dancing schools.

“We’ve been saving up for quite a while specifically to make the journey, and the girls are really excited about it. They’ll be performing on the Disney stage, taking part in a ceilidh at night which will include guest appearances from Disney characters, and then a Pre-Parade afterwards.”

“It should be great fun, which is the whole point - our dancers should enjoy themselves.”

The Lawrence School of Dance Studio is based in Peterhead, with classes held in Newburgh, Cruden Bay, Mintlaw, New Deer and Kintore.
