Aberdeenshire Council has proved that its public toilets are far from being bog standard, after taking a series of honours as well as the National Award for Scotland in the local authority entries in the 2011 ‘Loo of the Year’ awards.
The local authority was awarded seven top 5 star awards, eight 4 star awards and four 3 star awards for its loos, as well as securing joint 5th place in the UK Local Authority Premier League for public toilet entries. And just to show that the success is no mere flash in the pan, the accolades mean that the council has now attained membership in the ‘UK Champions League – Standards of Excellence’ as a result of gaining more than five 5 star awards.
Overall, nineteen Aberdeenshire public toilets took honours at the awards, with Ellon’s Riverside toilets and the facilities at Inverurie’s Station Road amongst those receiving the top 5-star accolade. The toilets at Port Elpinstone were awarded 4 stars.
Since their creation in 1987, the annual Loo of the Year Awards have identified the best public toilets throughout the United Kingdom. Every facility in contention received an unannounced visit from a Loo of the Year awards inspector and was assessed against a wide range of criteria – ranging from signage and decor, fixtures and fittings to overall standards of cleanliness and management.
Entries gaining three, four or five stars are presented with a grading certificate to help them promote their award-winning facilities to customers and staff.
Councillor Peter Argyle, chairman of the Infrastructure Services Committee, said: “It is great to hear that so many of our facilities have been recognised at such a high standard. This is a great reflection of the hard work of the staff who dutifully maintain our public facilities.”
Councillor Jill Webster, vice-chair of the committee, said: “We constantly aim to provide the best facilities for our residents and visitors to the area, and these awards lets us know that the work being done is not going unnoticed.”
