UDNY Community Trust has become a major beneficiary of the National Lottery's Growing Community Assets scheme, with an award of £269,000.
The money will be used to build an 800W wind turbine which, it is hoped, will generate significant profits for the community through the sale of electricity to the National Grid. The estimated £2 million raised from these sales over the next 20 years
will be used to fund a range of community projects, including support for school leavers and home insulation projects.
Garth Entwhistle, Udny Community Council chairman said, "Everyone involved in this community project is extremely pleased to receive this news, as it really encourages us and allows us to move forward with great confidence.
"Now we have received the money, we plan to have the wind turbine up and running by early next year. The money earned will help us generate a substantial income to drive a range of projects."
Big Lottery Fund Scotland Chair, Alison Magee, said, "This award will have a positive impact on the local community by allowing it to become more self sufficient. By using the profits to improve the everyday lives of local people, and investing in the futures of school leavers, this award will make a substantial difference to people's lives in years to come."
The award is one of seven totalling just short of £2.5 million announced by the largest National Lottery good cause distributors.
