THE Ellon and District Historical Society annual programme of talks will begin on September 10 in Ellon Library at 7.30pm.
They will continue on the second Wednesday of the month through until March 2009.

This is a new venue for the Society and the move has been prompted by requests from members and guests for a more central location for meetings.

The talks are open to all and non-members are asked to pay £3.00 at the door. The first talk in the programme will be by Fred Crawford on The Harrying of Buchan.

This year marks the 700th anniversary of the laying waste of the towns, villages and farms of Buchan by the forces of Robert Bruce.

This destruction was visited upon the tenants and allies of John Comyn, third Earl of Buchan, after the defeat of his forces by Bruce at the Battle of Inverurie.

The Comyns were powerful enemies and the savage Harrying of Buchan, with great loss of life, livestock and settlements, including the burning of Ellon, in 1308 meant that they would never again be in a position to threaten Bruce's leadership in Scotland.
