ELLON Meadow's 19s played its second match in the Murray Cup group stages against Colony Park 19s at Colony Park, Inverurie.
Ellon welcomed Richard Saunders back in goal Scott Lynch in right midfield, Kevin Anderson in left midfield and gave Meadows debuts to David Gourley in central midfield and Luke Stephen up front making five changes in the starting line up from last
weekend's game.
Out went Martin Buchan who was injured and Adam Wilson who was not available, Craig Booth and Craig McIntosh dropped to the bench and Alec Pirie out of squad.
The team started in a 4-4-2 formation and in positive fashion with Luke Stephen showing good movement in particular and David Gourley trying to get the ball down and play football, but gradually Colony took control of the game and started asking questions of the back four.
Ellon were being particularly exposed down the right side with David Watson having a terrible time against the Colony winger.
However Richard Saunders in goal was rarely tested because of some poor finishing by the Colony attackers.
Ellon finally lost a goal in the 43rd minute when Colony won a free kick which was played forward then flicked on by the head of the smallest Colony player on the park which picked out the Colony left winger who cut inside David Watson before firing into the net.
The second half started with Ellon having to make a change as Kevin Anderson who had been injured late on in the first half was unable to shake off an ankle knock and made way for John Stephen, making his Meadows debut.
This meant a re-shuffle to the defence as he went into central defence alongside Neill Irvine and Ryan Skinner moved to left midfield.
On the hour mark Colony increased their lead when poor defending in the Ellon box allowed a Colony player to fire home his team's second goal.
This seamed to waken Ellon and they began asking questions of Colony's central defenders in particular. The Meadows side won a corner which was taken by Goodwin and although Colony had chances to clear the ball it eventually fell to Neill Irvine who scored from close range.
Ellon were forced into another change when Ryan Skinner was taken off after a meaty challenge, initially it was thought Ryan had been winded and picked up a rib injury but after the game and diagnosis in hospital his injury was more serious.
Craig Booth was brought to central midfield and Luke Stephen was taken off, and the team tried for an equaliser.
But it wasn't to be as Colony scored two more goals in stoppage time at the end of the game.
Jim Booth was happier with this week's performance as a team although and he had no complaints about the outcome as Colony were the better side and deserved to win.
He said: "It is difficult to get into a rhythm when we are still experimenting with players and trying to get fitness levels up to standard.
"The attitude of the players was more encouraging this week and after another week of hard training we should be up for our next match which if we win would probably secure "A" league status.
"Hopefully the players will take confidence and belief from this performance."
He added: "On a sad note we will be without Ryan Skinner for a considerable time, he was taken to hospital after our game complaining of feeling unwell after his knock during the game and has been diagnosed with a cracked rib but more worryingly bleeding from his spleen, which has meant he was detained in hospital. We all wish Ryan a speedy recovery."
Ellon's next game ia against Glentanar Sports 19's at Westfield Park, Bridge of Don Kick Off 2pm.
