‘Aden Bike Challenge’ gets set to saddle up

Aden Country Park will host what organisers are billing as ‘Buchan’s first family bike ride’ later this spring, which takes in some of the most beautiful sights in the local area.

Families and individuals are encouraged to get on their bikes to take part in the ‘Aden Bike Challenge’ ride, which will be held on Sunday 18 March.

Taking place between Peterhead and Aden Country Park, it will take in the sights along the Formartine and Buchan Way, along a scenic eight mile trail.

A predominantly traffic-free route, it should be ideal for those with younger families, while the park itself offers a wide range of family facilities.

Chairman of Aberdeenshire Council’s Infrastructure Services Committee (ISC) Councillor Peter Argyle, said: “This is a fantastic opportunity for families to challenge themselves and share in the fun at Aden Park.

“We are lucky to have such fantastic facilities within easy striking distance from Peterhead and are blessed with a great off-road route linking the two.

“I would encourage anyone looking for a fun day out to come along and join in.”

Vice chair Jill Webster said: “This is a great idea to help boost the profile of cycling as a mode of transport in the area and I hope lots of people take part to help make this a popular event which could be repeated in future.

“Other events like this in our area have proved so popular they have really helped bring more visitors into the area and boost the local economy, and hopefully this could happen here.”

The bike ride is being held as part of a wider Heath and Wellbeing Fair being hosted at Aden County Park. It is intended to promote the benefits of cycling as a sociable and active way to improve physical and mental health.

This will include the ‘Bike Road Show’, a number of exhibition stalls and stands with plans to hold a Farmer’s Market.

The event is being developed by Aberdeenshire Council along with local community partners and the charity Chest Heart Stroke Scotland.

It is part of efforts to increase the number of journeys made by bicycle in and around Peterhead as part of the Cycle Demonstration Town project.
