Call to support cinema plans

Secretary of Ellon's Victoria Hall management committee, Keith Hart, hopes to attract cinema-goers back to the hall.

Secretary of Ellon's Victoria Hall management committee, Keith Hart, hopes to attract cinema-goers back to the hall.

A SECOND Cinema Day is to be held in Ellon in a bid to woo people back to the ‘silver screen’.

The town’s Victoria Hall was the venue on Wednesday, January 2, for a double bill as part of plans to bring films to the venue on a regular basis.

The Cinema Day was hosted by Film Mobile Scotland, which goes to various halls and venues in the North-east to show the latest releases.

Last week’s films were the Guardians, shown in the afternoon, and The Hobbitt in the evening.

Victoria Hall management committee secretary Keith Hart said ticket sales for The Hobbitt had been disappointing, but overall the venture had been a success.

He told the Times: “The question is do we run another? If you could have seen the sheer delight on the faces of the audience on leaving the hall, how could we say no.

“From comments and feedback, there is no doubt that the Victoria Hall cinema venue is valued by many, especially the mums.”

The next Cinema Day will be on Sunday, February 10, when Tinkerbell, which will be shown in the afternoon, and Les Miserables have been booked.

Mr Hart said they were hoping the evening film in particular would attract a bigger audience.

Back in the 1950s, the Victoria Hall was used as a cinema showing films on three nights a week.
