Organisers of the Aberdeen International Youth Festival (AIYF) are on the hunt for a young designer.

Youngsters from Aberdeenshire primary schools are being challenged to come up with an award winning design for the front cover of this year’s festival brochure.

With a prize worth £500 for the winning artwork, pupils from primaries 1-7 are being asked to create an iconic design that will be carried on the front cover of 30,000 festival brochures.

The challenge is one of many brand new initiatives by AIYF organisers in recognition of the festival’s 40th anniversary celebrations.

There will also be four runners-up prizes worth £50 each, a city centre exhibition of the best pieces and an opportunity for pupils to work with real artists to come up with the best designs.

The winning design will also be used on thousands of promotional materials such as posters, fliers and banners that will be seen all across the city during the 40th festival which takes place on August 1-11.

The festival brochure is given to all the international groups and participants that take part in AIYF every year and this means that the winning artwork will also be seen in countries such as the USA, Norway, Spain, Ghana and Singapore.

Stewart Aitken, chief executive officer and AIYF’s artistic director, said: “This is a fantastic opportunity for a young person to play a major part in the visual impact of this year’s festival. Not only will the design be seen by thousands of people from the North-east but our brochures travel far and wide with our international participants to all four corners of the globe.

“This competition is one of our most exciting 40th anniversary challenges and we are really excited about receiving all the entries and seeing the winning design on our brochure front cover as well as being displayed around the whole city and shire.”
