A GROUP of young Ellon footballers are preparing to fly the flag for Scotland in an international tournament in Spain.

Ellon Meadows U15’s have spent the last year raising funds for the trip to Barcelona during the Easter holidays to take part in the Trofeo Mediteranneo.

It has become something of a club tradition that the U15’s participate each year in the Costa Brava competition.

Club president Russell Moffatt, who is one of three coaches for this year’s event, said: “During our fundraising activities we met many local people who had either been on the trip previously or who knew someone who had.

“This year a party of 16 boys plus six adult coaches and helpers will be flying out during the Easter holidays to represent the club. The team have been fundraising tirelessly over the past year and would like to thank everyone who has donated money or raffle prizes, or attended their fundraising events.

“The club view the fundraising activities as a vital part of the trip as it is felt that the players appreciate the tournament more if they have had to work hard to get there.

“The majority of the boys going on the trip this year have played for the club since they were 9 or 10 years old and have probably been looking forward to the trip for most of that time.”

The party are also hoping to arrange a bit of sightseeing, including a visit to the Nou Camp stadium.
