Visitors and residents in Aberdeenshire are being encouraged to get fit and healthy with new ways to be part of the Active Aberdeenshire scheme.

The healthy living campaign makes it easier and cheaper to use council-run sports and leisure facilities.

Gift vouchers, for one month’s membership and Bring a Friend for Free induction, are now available to buy as a present for Christmas, birthdays or any special occasion, for a friend or family member who wants to get fit but maybe is not sure where to start. They are available to buy from all swimming pools and sports centres in the area.

In the past two years since Active Aberdeenshire was launched, payment has been accepted on a strict monthly basis – typically by direct debit. The new Pay As You Go membership means people do not have to sign up for regular payments, but can pay for a month of membership up front, as and when they would like it.

Active Aberdeenshire is also introducing a new day membership, designed for visitors to get cheap access to a wide range of sports and leisure facilities, even if they are only in the area for a short time.

Another new addition is the Single Adult Family membership, for one adult and all children at one address.

It is hoped that the new membership types will encourage more people to take advantage of the Active Aberdeenshire scheme to improve their health and fitness.

Active Aberdeenshire has already proven extremely popular, with thousands of people signing up to the scheme, which offers concessions for the over 60s, under 16s, the disabled, those on low wages, Young Scot card holders, students and people in receipt of carers allowance.

Education committee chair Councillor Isobel Davidson said: “Active Aberdeenshire is a fantastic way for people to take advantage of the council’s many and varied facilities to find the type of activity that suits them.”
