An Aberdeenshire Councillor has taken office as the latest President of the Rotary Club of Oldmeldrum.

Former journalist of The Ellon Times, Richard Thomson, 37, who now represents the Ellon & District ward on Aberdeenshire Council, was presented with the chain of office last week by the club’s outgoing President, Methlick-based engineer Martin Belshaw.

Mr Thomson, who has been a Rotarian since 2008, told members that it would be an honour to lead the club over the coming year, and repeated his desire to see more new people getting involved with the club.

The club, which has been running since 1999, supports a vast range of charities and good causes, as well as organising community events throughout the year including art and music festivals and not forgetting the hugely popular Easter Egg Hunt at Haddo House where 1500 wooden eggs can be found.

The club meets at Oldmeldrum’s Redgarth Hotel on Monday evenings at 6.30pm for 6.45pm throughout the year.
