Brilliant sunshine greeted the runners who took part in the Middleton Trust 3K Fun Run and 10K road race in Ellon on Sunday.

The turn-out was lower than expected with around 150 competitors crossing the finishing line in the 3k, while 60 finished the 10k.

The winner of the 10k was once again Ronald Gauld in a time of 35mins 28secs, some 41secs slower than last year. He was followed home for the second year by Jeremy Whittett, from Keith & District, in a time of 36mins 23secs, with Andrew Blackhall, of Fraserburgh Running Club, in third place.

First lady home was Lisa Stephen, of Fraserburgh Running Club, in a time of 41mins 18secs. In second place was last year’s winner Fiona Anderson, of Ellon, in a time of 44 mins 38 secs, with Carly McNeil, Aberdeen Amateur Athletics, in third place.

Winners of the Overall 10k Shield were the Fat Fighters, represented by Andrew Thomson, in 40mins 21secs. Adam Scragg in 41 mins 13secs and Claudia Scragg in 49mins 29secs, while Sandra’s Planks No.1 were the Local 10k team winners.

This event attracted the largest number of school entrants to date with no fewer than seven of the local feeder primary schools represented.

The winner of the Schools Shield with under 150 Pupils was Newburgh Mathers, represented by Lyall Booth in 12mins 6secs, Aidan Blano in 12 mins 45 secs and James McIntosh in 13mins 36secs. Auchterellon once again won the Shield for Schools over 150 pupils. On this occasion they were represented by Ella Murray 13mins 46secs, Amy Robertson 13 mins 47 secs, Mhairi Cruickshanks in 14 mins 14secs.

The father and son combination of Neil and James McIntosh, from Newburgh, won the family trophies with a combined time of 26mins 50secs, while the Watson Kids once again came out top in both the Local and Overall team events. Zac ran in 13mins 17secs, Joshua in 17mins 47secs and Coral in 18mins 38secs.

The organisers once again moved the starting time of both events forward so that they could be completed by lunchtime.

It certainly appeared to have increased the number of 3k entrants but did not impact on those going for the longer event.

An overall sponsor had not been successfully attracted to sponsor the overall event but the Trustees were grateful to the support they did receive from Enquest; Power Jacks; Running North and Cost Cutters.

The stewarding was also once again successfully carried by the local Cadet squadron whose efforts were praised by the Trustees.
