A story in last week’s Times caught the eye of a former Ellon bank worker.

Archive items relating to the Victoria Hall were contained in a wooden box found in a safe at the Clydesdale Bank.

The box was thought to date back to the 1960s, although the items inside originated in 1897.

Margaret Birnie (formerly Taylor), 69, got in touch with us to confirm the age of the box.

Margaret, who was secretary to then bank manager George Cockburn, said: “I remember it well and it does date back to the 1960s.

“The Clydesdale manager became Victoria Hall treasurer and the documents inside would have been from much further back.”

Margaret, who worked for the bank for 28 years, recalled when there were two Clydesdale businesses in Ellon - the current one in Market Street and the other in the Square.

She said: “When I saw the story in the Ellon Times it brought back memories.”

Ron Boddie, from the Clydesdale Bank, passed the box to delighted Victoria Hall committee members earlier this month.

It contains numerous fascinating items relating to the history of the building, including documents before the hall was constructed.
