A Co-op store in the North-east handed over more than £1000 so split between deserving groups in the local community.

The Co-op in Balmedie donated £600 to Balmedie Leisure Centre and £500 to the Better Balmedie Group.

The cash was raised through a fete held in June and annual Barbecue organised by the store.

Shop manager Arlene Calder told the Times: “We have been fundraising for over two years and raised over £2,000.

“We divide the money between the Co-op’s charity - CHAS - and decided to split the rest between Better Balmedie and the leisure centre.”

Leisure centre manager Shona Buchan explained how the money will help them improve the facilities.

She said: “The money will help with our preschool classes - they have been in desperate need of new equipment for some time now.”

Rosie Nicol of Better Balmedie added that the group are ‘very grateful’ to the Co-op for supporting their efforts.

She said: “We had initial funding when we set up five years ago but rely on donations from the public.

“We grow plants at our polytunnel and get plants from Aberdeenshire Council.

“We build and maintain planters around the village, do litterpicks, look after garden at polytunnel, have monthly meetings sometimes with speakers.

“Our main aim is to make Balmedie look good involving volunteers of all ages as we go along.

“We will probably use the money for a new planted feature in the village but his will be discussed at our AGM on October 30.”
