Ellon will be playing its part in a massive nationwide campaign in support of independent booksellers.
Saturday will mark the launch of the Books Are My Bag drive, which will be backed by a major publicty campaign through until Christmas.
Ellon will start its local initiative on Friday night with a poetry evening from 7-9pm at Better Read Books and Gifts shop in the town’s Ythan Terrace.
The nationwide effort is aimed at tackling the threat to many High Street bookshops, mainly from the internet.
Bill Kelly, of Ellon’s Better Read Books and Gifts, ran a competition earlier in the summer, in conjunction with Independent Booksellers Week, to draw attention to the benefits of shopping locally.
He said of the shop’s Friday night event: “All are welcome to come, read a favourite poem, a poem of their own, a song, or just to relax and listen.”
Refreshments will be provided during the evening.
