With Bill Gray as compere and Liz and John Slaven to entertain the audience at this year’s Young Entertainer of the Year enjoyed a very special concert.

Sadly numbers were down this year but the talented youngsters all gave first-class performances making the judging in the junior section especially hard for this year’s judges Maisie and Donald Moir from Roundhillock, Inverugie and committee member Robert Duncan.

Winners were 11 years-old Cassie Findlay from Keith in the junior section and 13 years-old Emily Veitch from Alford in the senior section.

Cassie is a very gifted young lady who plays fiddle, recites Doric Verse and sings. It was her singing that took her into first place.

Emily’s command of Doric Verse by J.C.Milne and Charles Murray just tipped her into first place with Rachel Havlin from Ellon on fiddle coming a close second. Abbie Christie from Finzean on accordion came second in the junior section with Jodie Christie, also Finzean, taking third place singing ‘The Rovin Ploughboy’ .

There was some fine fiddling from Gemma Christie also Finzean and Doric Verse from Megan Farquhar and Carly Slessor both Fraserburgh, to round off a thoroughly enjoyable evening.

The next meeting of ‘The Buchan Heritage Society’ is at Longside Parish Church Hall on Wednesday, October 19 at 7. 30pm when members will be entertained by Bill and Frank, along with a talk from RSPB and their recent Doric poetry competition winners.
