Foveran expansion plans given go-ahead

Councillors have backed ambitious plans to expand Foveran.

Formartine Area Committee have given the go-ahead to a masterplan for the village which could see more than 170 houses eventually built.

The committee discussed the proposals earlier this month, but delayed a decision until officials had received more details about the first phase of 50 houses, connectivity between the new development and the existing village, and education provision.

Councillors heard the expansion would create a new village centre and, possibly, a larger primary school. The existing housing would connect and integrate with the new extensions through footways and cycleways.

The site will feature in the Energetica development corridor stretching 30 miles from Aberdeen to Peterhead, which has been taken into account when drawing up the blueprint.

Architects Halliday Fraser Munro and developers Harper and Cochrane produced a revised masterplan and they believe the document will address a “perceived imbalance” in Foveran between housing, employment and services.

On Tuesday, the committee considered a report by infrastructure services director Stephen Archer which stated: “The developers have revised the Masterplan to include a development better focused on the land actually allocated for development with better connections to the existing village. Clarity regarding education requirements has also been provided.”

He added: “A phased approach to development would open up the opportunity for Foveran to become a self-sustaining village with the appropriate degree of infrastructure and supporting services.”

Consultation over the Foveran blueprint has included the local community and Foveran Community Council.

Council secretary Duncan Milne said after this week’s meeting: “We have been fully briefed and people are in favour of phase one because it will bring mains sewage to the village.

“Phase two remains to be seen. It was inevitable that we were going to see a lot of housing because we are in the middle of the Energetica corridor.”
