COMPETITORS are gearing up for the second Ellon Pedal Car Race, set to be held on September 4.
The race was a major hit last year, with dozens of competitors and hundreds of spectators turning out to see a selection of carefully constructed carties take to the road in pursuit of victory. The event has already been sponsored by JRD and Scotia Helicopters.
Organiser Simon Hailey, who conceived the idea last year, told the Times that he anticipated a good turnout for the event.
“I know of nine entries, with another 15 potentials - people sometimes build their cars in secret, so we won’t know how many entrants are coming forward until the day itself! The circuit is the same as last year, running in a circle around Ellon town centre. There will be a cycle race between 11am and 2pm, and the pedalcars set off at 3pm. There will be lots of stalls and traders coming, so I anticipate it will be very busy - we’ll also have a couple of pedal cars for members of the public to try out as well.
Winners last year were Ythan Cycle Club, followed in close second by Scotia Helicopters.
“Scotia have told me to get their name engraved on the trophy before the race even starts - they’re very confident, so the cycle club had better watch out!” he added.
