TWO former Ellon Academy teachers have congratulated the winners of a north Scotland-wide debating competition they helped to establish, presenting trophies to winners from Robert Gordon’s College and St Margaret’s School for Girls.

Alan Cameron and Eileen Burr, rector and teacher of classics respectively, set up the north of Scotland Schools Debating Competition 17 years ago, and were on hand to present the awards. The winners - Julia Symons and Evie Rae - took the John Alan Cameron Quaich, named for Mr and Mrs Cameron’s son, while the runners up - Frances Barnett and Angharad Campbell of St Margaret’s - took the Ellon Times Scroll, donated by the newspaper when the competition began in 1993.

Mr Cameron told the Times: “The standard of debate was very high indeed, and we would love to see more schools entering next year.”
