AN ELLON Academy student will leave school with a new insight into the world of local politics, after spending a week shadowing a local councillor.

S5 Mitchell Annand had been shadowing Cllr Rob Merson over the past week as part of a school work experience programme. The week has encompassed duties as a councillor and also that in Rob’s capacity as Senior Parliamentary Assistant.

Working fourteen hour days and travelling far, Mitchell thoroughly engaged with all that it involves being a councillor - including trips to Aberdeen, Turriff, Banff and Huntly for a variety of meetings, site visits and other duties on Cllr Merson’s schedule. During his week, he also sat in on a number of committee meetings, and met with Banff & Buchan MP Dr Eilidh Whiteford.

Mitchell remarked: “I’ve thoroughly enjoyed my time spent working with Cllr Merson, it has been very insightful, and overall the week has certainly broadened my understanding of the job whilst also hopefully enhancing my career abilities and options in later life.”

Cllr Merson added: “I was most impressed by the speed with which Mitchell got to grips with the many different facets of being a councillor. He was determined to grasp every opportunity to add to his experience and displayed a very mature and considered approach to every issue. Mitchell was a great pleasure to work with and I am confident that he has a very promising career in front of him.”
