A mobile science facility for young people is visiting Ellon Academy this week.

Lab in a lorry is designed to inspire the next generation of scientists and engineers.

It consists of three 44ft lorries which have been visiting schools, youth organisations, major events, and communities free-of-charge across the UK since early 2005.

Each vehicle is fitted with three distinct lab areas where groups of up to six young people can take part in each of the fun and informative experiments.

The programme is delivered by volunteers – all practicing scientists and engineers – and with at least one volunteer mentor to every six students, everyone gets to try their hand at experimental science and think about the surprises and questions that arise.

The aim is to encourage positive attitudes towards science and to make science and engineering more attractive to 11-14 year olds.

David Doig, Group Chief Executive of OPITO, one of the partners, said: “For the past five years there has been a visible increase in interest shown in STEM subjects at schools due to initiatives like this.

“Industries, such as oil and gas, depend on a highly qualified and talented feedstock coming through schools, colleges and universities in order to maintain the requirements of a workforce that have the skills that are needed. Lab in a Lorry supports the commitment of securing the next generation of skilled employees.”
