Aberdeenshire Council has appointed Maria Walker as the new Director of Education, Learning and Leisure.
Educated in Aberdeen, Maria is currently Depute Director of Education and Children’s Services at Perth and Kinross Council. She has held a number of different roles within education and cultural services with both Perth and Kinross Council and Tayside Regional Council. She has also pursued separate successful careers in both teaching and community work.
Speaking following her appointment to the role, Chief Executive Colin Mackenzie welcomed Maria to the Senior Management team of the council, saying: “Maria brings many excellent qualities to the role of Director. She has a strong awareness of the pressures facing local government, an enthusiasm for working with people to find local solutions and is keen to engage with employees and parents to take forward the service.
“I feel that she will make a strong addition to our senior management team.”
Maria, who is expected to take up her new position at Aberdeenshire Council in the early summer, said: “Having been educated in Aberdeen I have always felt a close affection for the area. I know the area very well and am delighted to be able to move back.”
“This is a chance for me to be a Director in a successful organisation and I am looking forward to working with colleagues and to build a legacy for the service.”
