A former police inspector is re-introducing an education programme aimed at keeping young drivers safe on North-east roads.

Alan Brown is organising a pilot project for sixth year pupils at Ellon Academy next week.

And he hopes the course on Wednesday and Thursday will lead to the initiative being rolled out to other schools in the area.

Mr Brown - a former operational head of the former Grampian Police road safety unit - is keen to fill the void left by the loss of the award-winning Driving Ambition road safety education programme, which was delivered by the force to senior pupils in Aberdeen, Aberdeenshire and Moray.

Since leaving the police at the end of last year, he has started work as training development manager with DAB Plus Driver Training at Maud, who will facilitate next week’s event.

The social enterprise business delivers a variety of driver training and road safety education in the North-east.

Mr Brown said: “With the birth of Police Scotland, the force took the decision that legislation says that police will enforce, local authorities will educate.

“There is a void there and we are stepping in and trying to address that. Not on our own - we are speaking with the council, working in partnership and looking to work even closer with them around this.

“Road safety is huge. We want to do what we can, but we are under no illusions we can’t do it all ourselves.

“It is a partnership approach be it members of the public, be it drivers, be it councils, whatever.”

Mr Brown added: “I am aware that road safety is a big issue locally, particularly in light of recent unfortunate fatalities on our roads, so the running of this pilot project is a very positive step forward by Ellon Academy, ensuring their students get a safe start to their driving careers.”

The programme will include a road safety video, driving instruction, an explanation of basic vehicle maintenance, and advice on buying a car.
