There has been widespread condemnation of damage to play equipment in Ellon.

Police, local politicians and parents have described the vandalism at Auchterellon park as “mindless”.

It is such a shame when the minority spoil things that have been made better for everyone else

An investigation is under way and following the incident, police patrols are focusing on the town’s playparks.

The equipment at Auchterellon was only installed last year after fund-raising by the school and parent council.

It is understood the vandalism, which left several wooden frames broken, occurred over the weekend.

Inspector Jamie Harrison, of Formartine community policing team, told the Times foot patrols have been stepped up around Ellon during the school holidays.

He said: “I was bitterly disappointed to learn of this act of mindless vandalism. It is such a shame when the minority spoil things that have been made better for everyone else.”

“Following this incident I have instructed greater focus on play parks around the town. We are currently investigating the incident and have been conducting house-to-house enquiries.”

One local resident, who did not want to be named, said: “This is awful. How can people do this? It’s such a shame for the kids who love playing on this equipment.”

The vandal attack has also angered local politicians.

Councillor Gillian Owen branded it “disgraceful”.

She added: “Words fail me. Communities ask the council for parks to be child-friendly and we try to assist and then rogues come and do this.

“This is an appalling act and the people who did this should be thoroughly ashamed of themselves.

“Sadly, what incentive does the council have to replace with new as this would probably happen again. We have to find who is responsible and make an example of them.”

Couuncillor Isobel Davidson said: “It is incredibly disappointing that the play equipment installed by the parents and pupils last year at Auchterellon Primary School has been vandalised.

“The children waited a long time for this equipment to go in and were excited about it happening. The school and parent council raised the money to buy and instal it.

“I hope that anyone who knows who did this reports it to the police. It is such a shame when some people feel the need to destroy work that is done to make Ellon a better place.”
