Work on the new £36 million Ellon Academy will begin later this month.

The building contract has been awarded to FMP Joint Venture Limited after the project tender was approved by members of the Policy and Resources

Committee in April.

Work on the new school will begin at the end of June, and it is due to be up and running by August 2015.

The innovative school and community campus will include a 1,200-capacity school, five-lane swimming pool, Banff & Buchan Outreach Centre, Support

for Learners unit and community, learning and development facilities.

Proposals for the new school campus, at Cromleybank in Ellon, includes plans for a new footbridge across the River Ythan, to improve links with

the town centre.

Chair of Aberdeenshire Council’s Policy and Resources Committee, Councillor Jim Gifford, said: “This is an exciting project for pupils, parents, teachers and the wider Ellon community.

“I am glad that the plans are progressing on schedule and look forward to seeing the new community campus in 2015.”

FMP Director, Raymond Millar, said: “We are delighted to be included in Aberdeenshire’s capital plan of works and that our first opportunity is the Ellon Academy Community Campus.

“It is an outstanding project in a challenging environment. We recognise that this building project is more than just a school, and we are committed to engaging with the wider community as part of the delivery of this first-class facility.”

Planning permission for the new school was given in October 2012, and the site at Cromleybank was purchased in January, 2013.
