An Ellon bookshop has announced its backing for National Poetry Week.
The event gets under way today (Thursday) and Better Read Books and Gifts is supporting it’s 21st birthday celebrations by running a poetry competition for secondary pupils in the run-up to Christmas.
Entries will be welcome from all pupils within Aberdeenshire and beyond.
Bill Kelly, of Better Read Books, said: “We have been running a series of poetry evenings for over 10 years and we have been amazed and delighted with the level of poetical talent available in the North-east of Scotland.”
“Poetry has that magical ability to imbue words with greater meaning and touch the listener or reader more forcibly than much of prose.
“We have contacted educationalists in the area who have given their support for the project.”
The bookshop will be offering a total of £100 worth of book tokens for the best entries on the themes of ‘Change’ or ‘Winter’ to be submitted by December.
The winners will be announced at a poetry evening to be held at Better Read in Ythan Terrace on Friday, December 11.
