Eating your porridge and behaving yourself is the key to living a long life according to an Ellon man who celebrated a special birthday last week.

George Forbes enjoyed his 100th birthday at home in Ythanbank surrounded by family last Thursday.

Ellon and District Councillor Richard Thomson presented Mr Forbes with a bottle of whisky and card to mark the occasion.

George’s daughter Margaret Wallace said that her father is still as ‘bright as a button.’

She told the Times: “His legs and knees are quite bad so he uses a zimmer but his memory is good. He likes gardening and planted the tatties and vegetables with his walking stick when he was no longer able - that is how determined he is.

“His mother lived until she was around 104 and he says his advice is to eat porridge and to behave yourself!

“My dad has five children - myself, Fred, Evie, twins June and Sandy - there were six of us but they were killed in a road traffic incident.”

Nine grandchildren and nine great grandchildren visit George when they can.

Councillor Thomson added: “It was lovely to join Mr Forbes and hear him tell his life story. I hope that he is able to enjoy many more birthdays in good health!”

Born in Colliston and Slains he worked as a dairy cattleman in Udny. He celebrated his Diamond Wedding Anniversary with his wife Nelly in 1999. Nelly, from Tarves, passed away in 2003. Celebrations continued on Saturday when a supper was held in the Royal British Legion Ellon branch where family and around 30 members gathered.
