AN ELLON couple who have been together for sixty years celebrated their diamond anniversary on Thursday.
Former Ellon Town Councillor Lindsay Halliday and wife Cathie received a commemorative bouquet from Cllr Rob Merson, as well as a basket of fruit and box of chocolates. Speaking to the Times, Mr Halliday said that the secret to the couple’s long marriage was their innate compatibility.
“We belong to eachother,” he said. “We have a lot of shared interests - we used to go dancing together a lot, and now we spend a lot of time in the garden.”
Cathie added: “Our other strength is that there isn’t a boss.”
Lindsay met Cathie at a dance in Hatton, where he was performing on the trumpet with a local band.
“She was a popular girl, and a very good dancing. She was very charismatic. To this day I don’t know how I mustered up the courage to speak to her - it was very fortunate we met,” he said.
The couple have two daughters, five grandchildren and four great-grandchildren, whose photos take pride of place on their sitting room wall. As well as working as a town councillor, Lindsay was also a Captain with the Ellon Boys Brigade and on numerous local committees, as well as Secretary for Ellon United.
