AN ELLON couple have celebrated their diamond wedding a week early with a surprise party.
William and Iris Winton were on a day out with family when they stopped off at the Poacher’s Rest near Ellon on Saturday.
Little did they know that guests were waiting inside to lay on a special anniversary event for them.
Son Kenny told the Times: “It was quite a surprise for them. They were speechless for a wee while but everything went well and it was a great day.”
William, 82, belongs to Portsoy, and Iris, whose 80th birthday falls on their anniversary on Saturday, was born in Montrose.
Kenny said: “We thought we would hold the party a week early so they wouldn’t suspect anything. Around £120 was raised from donations at the party for the residents of Bonnyton House in Ellon.”
Local councillor Rob Merson presented them with a bouquet and a fruit basket on behalf of Aberdeenshire Council.
The couple met in Aberdeen when William was a bus conductor and Iris was travelling to work. They have two sons and a daughter, seven grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
