Two Ellon teams who took part in this summer’s Relay For Life Peterhead contributed more than £7,000 towards £181,000 that was raised for Cancer Research UK.

The Mums and Dads on the Run team, made up of Fiona Harvey, the charity’s local fundraising manager, and her friends from Ellon, raised over £6,000 in their first year at the event.

They held a bake sale, collected money at Tesco in Inverurie and sold flowers at Race For Life in Aberdeen to reach their total.

The Elloner’s Farm team, consisting of Ellon Ladies Hockey team members, raised more than £900. The hockey players have taken part in Relay For Life Peterhead since 2010 and are also responsible for organising the entertainment programme.

Despite torrential rain, July’s activities included various team games such as human hungry hippos, dress up your team-mate and obstacle courses.

Fiona, Mums and Dads on the Run team captain, said: “We’re over the moon with the amount of money that our team raised this year. We started fundraising at the beginning of the year and never could have imagined that we’d reach over £6,000.

“Our whole team got involved. The younger members saved up their 20ps and baked cupcakes to sell to friends and family while the older members took on fundraising challenges and collected in supermarkets.”

Lorraine Coleman, Relay For Life Peterhead committee chair, said: “We’d like to thank our many volunteers and participants who made this Relay such a success. The secret behind our success is definitely the commitment of the teams and committee and the continued support of the North-east community.”
