Ellon Royal British Legion has taken ownership of a new flagpole at the town’s Victoria Hall.

The Legion had expected to pay for the flagpole from their own funds, but club members Mike Green and his wife Mame said that they would like to pay for it themselves.

Mike said: “When we moved to Ellon about 17 years ago everyone was so welcoming.

“This is a token of our appreciation.”

The new vandal-proof fibreglass flagpole stands directly outside the hall.

Vice-president of the RBL Ellon branch, Norman Fraser, suggested that it was time for a new flagpole two years ago.

Norman said: “The flagpole used to be up against the wall at Victoria Hall.

“There was a rope hanging down so it meant that people would often come and take the flag.

“We would often have to call the Fire Brigade. I raised the health and safety issue at the council meeting and it just snowballed from there.

“We managed to get 50% knocked off of the £160 planning fee as it’s a community venture, which was a wee help.”

The legion is planning to install a plaque at the foot of the flagpole so that people can see it when they walk past.
