An Ellon sailor has graduated as a mine warfare specialist.
Able rate Tommy Dunz, 27, completed his phase two training with Victory Squadron at HMS Collingwood in Fareham.
Tommy joined the Royal Navy in March this year and since his enrolment he has taken part in Exercise Trafalgar and
was runner-up in the Royal Navy Eastern Region Badminton Championships.
He said: “I’m looking forward to heading to the Gulf and utilising the skills I’ve learned at Collingwood.”
During his 14-week course Tommy was trained in the specialist areas of mine warfare, including the various types of mines, how they operate and how they’re used in war including disposal.
In addition, he also learned how to detect mines and minefields using mine-hunting sonar and how to launch and operate the remote-controlled mine-disposal vehicle.
After successfully completing the course, Tommy has now been drafted to HMS Excellent, where he can exercise his training in a practical setting.
HMS Collingwood is the home of the Maritime Warfare School which contributes to the operational capability of the Fleet by providing first class training to all Naval officers and ratings.
