ELLON Gordon Highlanders veteran Jim Lawrence has spoken of his pride after being invited to witness the unveiling of a new statue in Aberdeen commemorating the former regiment.

The ceremony took place last weekend at the Castlegate, where Prince Charles, Duke of Rothesay unveiled the memorial, which depicts two Gordons - in Victorian and contemporary uniform - in fighting pose.

Jim, who saw action with the Gordon Highlanders in Cyprus in the 1950s, told the Times that the statue would keep memories of the regiment alive. “The regiment was amalgamated a long time ago, and a lot of folk still regret the amalgamation, but it’s a sign of the times,” he said. “However, this statue - and the Gordon Highlanders Museum - will keep the memory of the Gordons alive.”
