Two former Ellon Academy pupils have praised a youth leadership programme organised by local Rotarians.

Rotary Youth Leadership Awards (RYLA) give young people an opportunity to develop personal and leadership skills at a week’s residential course.

The Rotary Club of Ellon regularly send students to the courses. At a recent club meeting, Robert Reid and Rachael Hawkins outlined their experiences at the RYLA camps held at the Aberfeldy Outdoor Centre last summer.

They spoke enthusiastically – Rachael referring to it as “one of the best weeks of my life”.

The days were filled with non-stop activity, the mornings usually comprised motivational talks from leaders in the world of sport, business or the services, and then afternoons were taken up with more physical challenges – hill climbing, gorge walking and abseiling.

Robert and Rachael described how the RYLA camp had given them much more self-confidence as well as experience in leadership, team building, communicating and problem-solving.

They thanked the club for sponsoring their attendance at the camps and Rotarian Alan Donaldson thanked them for sharing their experiences.
