A Hatton student is to lead a group from Robert Gordon University (RGU) taking part in a Challenge Event to scale Mount Kilimanjaro.

The event hopes to raise money for a charity project which provides education and healthcare for children in Tanzania.

The award-winning student expedition, organised annually by the fundraising arm of RGU’s Students’ Union, RGU:RAG, is aiming to raise cash for Childreach International, a leading global charity which supports children in the developing world.

Hatton woman Aileen MacAlister (22), is heading up the student group which will be traveling to Tanzania on June, 4, where they will begin their gruelling six-day trek up the mountain.

The Tanzania trek is the third time Aileen has taken part in a Challenge Event having travelled to Morocco the last two summers to take part in charity expeditions for Childreach International.

Aileen, who is studying Communication Design, said: “I have been involved with Childreach International since my first year of university. I got involved because it gives participants a chance to challenge themselves while raising money for an amazing cause. I have come back each year because I have seen how the work they do really makes a positive impact on the communities they work in.”

Prior to the trip itself, each member of the team is required to raise £2,895 by organising a variety of fundraising events such as a day-long static bike challenge, bake sales, ceilidhs, street collections and pub quizzes.

In preparation the students are planning to climb Ben Nevis together after the fundraising period is over to get a small taster for what it will be like to reach the summit of the world’s largest free standing mountain.

Aileen added: “I am really looking forward to the project visit and also the achievement of reaching the summit if I make it that far!”

The group has set individual fundraising deadlines for Friday, April 8 and are all now more than half way towards their goals.
