Library service is expanded

READERS in North and Central Aberdeenshire who are unable to use library facilities through long-term illness or a disability are being encouraged to use a free direct delivery service.

The Library Direct initiative was piloted in Inverurie but is now being rolled out across all of Central and North Aberdeenshire. It is hoped the service will soon be available in South Aberdeenshire.

All residents, regardless of age, who are temporarily or permanently confined to home due to disability, infirmity or illness can use the service. It is also available to the carers of someone affected by these conditions.

Volunteers work closely with the local library to deliver a small collection to suit individual requirements. This collection can consist of books, talking books, music CDs or DVDs. Volunteers will return every four weeks to collect loaned items and deliver new resources.

Education, Learning and Leisure Committee chair, Councillor Isobel Davidson, said: “This service is a great addition to the Library and Information Service, and will allow people who cannot make it into our branches in North and Central Aberdeenshire, to continue to enjoy their membership.

“Our staff will work alongside volunteers to distribute requested materials to our members, allowing them to enjoy these resources in their own homes.”

Contact details for all libraries can be found online at www.aberdeenshire.gov.uk/libraries/index.asp.
