Pitmedden woman praises community for charity support

A PITMEDDEN woman has praised the local community who supported an event to raise funds for a charity providing vital help for the visually impired.

Mother-of-three Suzanne Cattanach, 38, was devastated after losing central vision in both eyes within months last year. She has a condition called Myopic Corinoretinal Degeneration and is now registered blind.

Suzanne organised a casino and disco night in the village hall on Saturday night and it raised more than £1,100 for North East Sensory Services (formerly Grampian Society for the Blind).

She said: “I’m absolutely delighted. It was a great night and I’d like to thank everyone for their donations and support on the evening.

“We had around 74 people there and it was a great community event. I really appreciated everyone’s support.”

Following her diagnosis, Suzanne was determined to keep her life as independent as possible and she decided to organise the fundraising event to support the charity.

She added: “It spurred me on to raise awareness of the condition and this was the main point of the fundraiser, and also to raise enough money to give to the charity for people like me who need things in and outwith their homes to keep day-to-day life as independent as possible.”

North East Sensory Services provides help and advice to individuals and their families to help them maintain as much independence as possible. The organisation makes available many items, including talking equipment for various places around the home, to electronic and computing equipment.

Suzanne said the fundraising night will now become an annual event.
