An Ellon Academy pupil is preparing for a year-long teaching assignment in Malawi.

Joanne Falconer, 17, has to raise more than £7000 in just a few months in order to fund the trip.

And she has embarked on a fund-raising drive for what she describes as an “incredible opportunity” this summer.

The final year pupil took part in the World Challenge expedition to Tanzania last summer.

For a week during her stay, her group of 16 helped to paint and build a fence around a safe house for Kilimanjaro Young Girls in Need.

She said: “ Helping these children and this charity really inspired me to help others who are not as fortunate as myself.

I will also have the incredible opportunity to help children who are less fortunate than myself

“In August of this year I decided to apply for a gap year with Project Trust, a gap year charity that sends more than 250 volunteers abroad to 25 different countries a year.”

Joanne was then accepted to go on a four-day selection course on the Isle of Coll where she stayed with a host family and took part in a number of individual and team activities.

A month later she was accepted for the volunteer’s post in Malawi.

She explained: “I am going to work in an orphanage as a primary teacher.

“Whilst in Malawi I’ll have the amazing experience to live with a host family, and will be able to learn all about the Malawian culture and their way of life.

“I will also have the incredible opportunity to help children who are less fortunate than myself and who live in deprived areas.

“I’ll be able to help them learn the English language and about our Scottish traditions.”

Joanne said she is determined to reach her target figure for the visit.

She has been organising various fund-raising activities, including craft fairs and helping out in a livery yard.

This Saturday (December 12) Joanne is running a Christmas craft event with around 20 stalls in Ellon’s Victoria Hall from 10am until 1pm.
