A big-hearted Monymusk youngster has raised more than £400 for charity Meningitis Now after her cousin was affected by the condition.

In October 2011 Kelly Grant’s cousin, Fiona, was rushed to hospital with life-threatening meningitis. Having been dropped at school in the morning, but for a slight confusion about the day, everything appeared normal. Within an hour she was slurring words and complaining of pins and needles in her legs. Half -an-hour later she appeared disorientated and confused, and an ambulance was called.

On arrival at hospital she was immediately given intravenous drugs to fight any bacterial or viral infection, while diagnostic tests were run. By 3pm Fiona was put into a medically induced coma and put on life support.

Against the odds, Fiona made a full recovery, and has just completed her second year at St Andrews University. The biggest factor in this outcome was the recognition of the symptoms and action then taken, that enabled the rapid commencement of treatment.

Determined to promote Meningitis awareness, to share her cousins experience and to help those not as fortunate, Kelly (11), from Monymusk, organised a Fun Dog Show, held at Bogend Farm, Oyne on Sunday, (June 7).

Planning every detail including; securing a venue, working budgets, ordering rosettes, selling sponsorship packages, raffle prizes and catering, the whole day went off with great efficiency and enjoyment.

Over 20 dogs and their owners attended on the day and had great fun participating in classes which included “waggiest tail”, “best trick”, “dog agility”, and “fancy dress”.

The day concluded with the awarding of show champion. After much deliberation by head judge, Jenny Sheen, this went to Issac owned by Sue Heard.

Thanks to the fantastic support of participants and local business sponsors, a total of £466.65 was raised.
